Are We Stingy(吝嗇)? Yes Published: December 30, 2004

President Bush finally roused himself yesterday from his vacation in Crawford, Tex., to telephone his sympathy to the leaders of India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia, and to speak publicly about the devastation of Sunday's tsunamis in Asia.

We beg to differ. Mr. Egeland was right on target. We hope Secretary of State Colin Powell was privately embarrassed when, two days into a catastrophic disaster that hit 12 of the world's poorer countries and will cost billions of dollars to meliorate, he held a press conference to say that America, the world's richest nation, would contribute $15 million. That's less than half of what Republicans plan to spend on the Bush inaugural festivities.

Bush administration officials help create that perception gap. Fuming at the charge of stinginess, Mr. Powell pointed to disaster relief and said the United States "has given more aid in the last four years than any other nation or combination of nations in the world." But for development aid, America gave $16.2 billion in 2003; the European Union gave $37.1 billion. In 2002, those numbers were $13.2 billion for America, and $29.9 billion for Europe.

Making things worse, we often pledge more money than we actually deliver. Victims of the earthquake in Bam, Iran, a year ago are still living in tents because aid, including ours, has not materialized in the amounts pledged. And back in 2002, Mr. Bush announced his Millennium Challenge account to give African countries development assistance of up to $5 billion a year, but the account has yet to disburse a single dollar.(透過一年前伊朗地震及零二年對非洲捐助的Millennium Challenge account兩實例,強而有力地說服了讀者美國的偽善。)

The US announced that it and Japan, India and Australia would form a 4—nation core relief group to co—ordinate efforts to provide relief to countries hit by the tsunami. Desirous of a dominant role, the US showed a chauvinistic(本族第一主義的,又譯沙文主義的,大男人主義就是male chauvinism) eagerness to order others about. That has unnecessarily caused selfless relief efforts to smack of politics.

May Hunghom Peninsula forever stand

Let's call it a day! The government has been cheek by jowl with the tycoons, not with the people. It is time the government laid all the cards on the table with us. We should have a say in how our precious land is used. Thanks to the effort made by people from the four cornors of the earth, the government at last reminds the tycoons it has the power to stop the redevelopment. But this is far from enough. Let's stand up for our rights and stop the government and the tycoons to cut the Gordian knot
in this isuue.

Let's call it a day夠了,停吧
Cheek by jowl
Lay all the cards on the table
Have a say
The four cornors of the earth
Stand up for捍衛 / 支持
Cut the Gordian knot

Mere Liberal Studies

The Education Authority believes that by offering a 90-hour training, teachers can be qualified to teach Liberal Studies. It’s really pulling my legs. 90 hours is even too short to produce a jack-of-all-trades. It’s nothing but a laughing stock. I don’t know why our government has always got the power to turn gold into stone. Why don’t we let the students be in the driving seat? And allow them to decide what they want to learn and how they want to learn it.

Pull one's leg
Laughing stock
Turn gold into stone
Be in the driving (driver's) seat

In the name of developing arts!

The Tung administration claims that the development of the West Kowloon cultural district is to promote arts in Hong Kong. However, it is just window dressing. The naked truth is that it is practising favouritism again in the name of developing arts! This is its hidden agenda.

The naked truth
in the name of 借助某事/人來達成目的
